SBMI Hosting PASS Day 2020 on September 25th
SBMI is pleased to host PASS Day (Planning for Academic Success at SBMI) on Friday September 25th. During the event, students will hear from faculty, alumni, and fellow students as they learn tips on how to navigate SBMI and explore the many ways SBMI’s coursework helps in professional preparation.
This year’s event will be 100% virtual and hosted via GoToWebinar on Friday, September 25, 2020 starting at 1:00 PM. Please register for SBMI PASS Day 2020 on the GoToWebinar website. After registering, students will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.
At 3:00 PM, the PASS Day agenda will end and SBMI’s SGO will host a virtual mixer for SBMI Students to gather and mingle, online. To RSVP for the mixer, click here. If you have any questions about the event, feel free to contact the Office of Academic Affairs.
2020 Virtual One Health Conference
Harris County Public Health (HCPH) would like to invite the SBMI Community to attend its 13th annual HCPH One Health Conference. Due to COVID-19, this year’s conference will be held virtually and will take place on Tuesday, October 20, 2020 & Thursday, October 22, 2020 from 1:00 to 4:00PM (CDT).
The conference unites veterinary, medical, environmental, and public health disciplines and is open to any professionals or students that wish to join. This year’s conference topics will be concentrated on Global Health, Health Equity, Zoonotic Diseases, and The Future of the Pandemic.

Assistant Professor Licong Cui, PhD Grant Awards
Licong Cui, PhD, assistant professor at SBMI, has been awarded over $2.8 million in research grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) over the past four months. With each award, Cui plans to build resources to enhance the practices of both clinicians and researchers.
“My ultimate goal with each grant is to advance informatics applications in disease-specific areas through data science innovation,” Cui said.

SBMI Bragging Points
Several members of the SBMI Community have recently earned special recognition or contributed to the informatics community. We want to congratulate those individuals on these accomplishments.
- Seven members of the SBMI community co-authored a JAMIA article that was recently published. The team includes PhD Student Laila Rasmy Gindy Bekhet; Professor Cui Tao, PhD; Professor Hua Xu, PhD, Associate Professor Degui Zhi, PhD; Researcher Firat Tiryaki; Researcher Yang Xiang; and Researcher Yujia Zhou, PhD. The article is titled “Representation of EHR data for predictive modeling: a comparison between UMLS and other terminologies.”
- Professor Xiaoqian Jiang, PhD has a co-authored article that was published in Nature Genetics. In the Perspective, Dr. Jiang and co-author Amalio Telenti, MD, PhD explore the key elements to the "modern data ecosystem" as they examine the management of healthcare research data.
