Happy Thanksgiving from SBMI

We want to wish everyone a happy and healthy Thanksgiving Holiday. Enjoy the cherished time with your family and friends as you reflect on the many reasons you are thankful.

SBMI offices will be closed on Nov. 24 and 25 for the holiday. Regular business hours will resume at 8 AM on Monday, Nov. 28.

SBMI Bragging Points

Several members of the SBMI Community have recently earned special recognition or contributed to the informatics community. We want to congratulate those individuals on these accomplishments.

  • Professor and Associate Dean for Academic and Curricular Affairs Susan Fenton, PhD received one of UTHealth Houston’s most distinguished awards. She was named the recipient of the 2021 President’s Scholar Award for Excellence in Teaching. Visit https://go.uth.edu/2021PSA for more information on her award.
  • PhD Students Ivan Coronado & Evan Yu have been awarded fellowship renewals for the NLM Training Program in Biomedical Informatics and Data Science.
  • Associate Professor and Alumna Julie Brixey, PhD '06, MPH, RN and Alumnus Anwar “Siraj” Mohammad Sirajuddin, MBBS, MS ’06 recently earned the designation of Fellow of AMIA (FAMIA). They will be inducted during AMIA's Clinical Informatics Conference in May of next year.
  • DHI Candidate and MS Alumna Kathy Defigueiredo, MS '15 recently earned her Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS) certification. This credential indicates that Kathy is part of “a group of committed professionals from across health care who are determined to advance the patient safety field.”
  • Assistant Professor Angela Ross, DNP, MPH was recently named a Fellow Member of HIMSS (FHIMSS). She earned the recognition for her "service, professional participation, job experience, publications, and presentations."
  • Meet the 2022 UTHealthLeads School of Biomedical Informatic Fellwos

  • UTHealthLeads is a one-year student fellowship program to develop future leaders in health care. Four SBMI students were recently named fellows for the 2022-2023 academic year.

Registration Exploration on November 29th

We invite all SBMI students to attend Registration Exploration on Tuesday, November 29th from 4:00 to 5:30 PM (CDT) via WebEx. SBMI Faculty & the Office of Academic Affairs will help students learn more about the courses offered for Spring 2023.

Meet the Instructor Night

Instructors and Teaching Assistants will participate during the virtual event to answer questions about course curriculum, the syllabus, learning objectives, and more. SBMI staff will also be available to answer questions about degree plans for all programs. Register via this WebEx link.

Scholarship Opportunities for SBMI Students

  • SBMI Scholarships for spring 2023
  • The School of Biomedical Informatics (SBMI) offers scholarship opportunities to students enrolled in the school as funds become available. We are currently accepting applications for several scholarships to be awarded for the spring 2023 semester.

  • RSVP

  • All SBMI students who are in good academic standing & enrolled for spring 2023 courses in a certificate, masters or doctoral program are eligible to apply.

  • Submit your SBMI Scholarship Application via Qualtrics and note that no email submissions will be accepted. The application deadline is Sunday, Nov. 27 at 11:59 PM CT.
  • Student InterCouncil (SIC) Scholarships
  • SIC Application

  • The Student InterCouncil (SIC) is awarding six $1,000 scholarships to current UTHealth Houston students this year (two recipients for each scholarship). Visit the SIC scholarship opportunities webpage for more detailed information and to download application forms for each scholarship.
