Fall 2023 Course Registration Now Open

Regular registration for fall 2023 is currently open and ends on Aug. 25 in myUTH. If you have questions regarding registration, email the Office of Academic Affairs at [email protected].

For fall 2023, McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics at UTHealth Houston courses will be taught both in-person and online. Students registered for in-person classes are expected to attend the on-campus sessions during the scheduled time and day each week. Students enrolled in web-based classes will complete all coursework 100% online. There is no requirement to visit campus during the fall semester for any web-based course.

The fall 2023 semester will begin on Aug. 28. For a full list of courses offered in the fall, visit the Semester Schedule webpage.

McWilliams Bragging Points

Members of our McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics Community have recently achieved noteworthy accomplishments. We want to recognize and applaud these individuals.

  • McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics was well represented at the National Library of Medicine (NLM) T15 Training Conference in Stanford University. Three of our PhD Students (left to right; Evan Yu, Astrid Manuel, and Ivan Coronado) and our Associate Dean of Research Elmer Bernstam, MD (back) were in attendance. The conference was hosted in late June.

  • Several McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics faculty members and researchers recently published a new article on "The Impact of COVID-19 on the Financial Performance of Largest Teaching Hospitals." The research team includes Associate Professor Tiffany Champagne-Langabeer, PhD, Professor James Langabeer, PhD, Assistant Professor Karima Lalani, PhD, Research Student & SPH PhD Candidate Francine Vega, and Statistician Marylou Cardenas-Turanzas, MD, DrPH.
  • Professor Dean Sittig, PhD co-authored a JAMIA article that is now available.
  • Assistant Professor Yejin Kim, PhD and Professor Xiaoqian Jiang, PhD also co-authored a new JAMIA article.

We invite all McWilliams students to attend Registration Exploration on Thursday, Aug. 3 at 4 PM (CDT).

The virtual event will be hosted in WebEx.

McWilliams Faculty & the Office of Academic Affairs will help students learn more about the courses offered for fall 2023. Instructors and Teaching Assistants will participate during the virtual event to answer questions about course curriculum, the syllabus, learning objectives, and more. McWilliams staff will also be available to answer questions about degree plans for all programs.

Unique Opportunities for McWilliams Students

Several professional organizations and companies have recently shared unique opportunities that we want all McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics students to be aware of.

  • The Texas Department of State Health Services is offering various internship opportunities. We encourage all interested McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics students to apply. Many of the positions are based in cities across Texas, but there are virtual options as well.
  • The Journal of Biomedical Informatics (JBI) is recruiting students/trainees for its student editorial board (SEB). The SEB provides opportunities for outstanding informatics trainees to receive in-depth exposure to the peer-review process and the operation of a scientific journal. Sept. 1, 2023 is the deadline to apply.

  • The UTHealth Houston McGovern Center-Inprint Writing Fellowship is searching for 18 fellows for the Class of 2023-2024. This intensive writers’ workshop for health professionals requires one 3-hour-long workshop per month from October 2023 through May 2024, in which fellows will discuss assigned readings, complete writing exercises, and engage in supportive and critical analyses of their and their classmates’ creative works.   • Submissions are now open for the AMIA/HL7 FHIR App Competition, sponsored by Leap of Faith Technologies. The competition aims to showcase the most innovative and useful FHIR implementations. First, second, and third-place winners will receive a cash prize.

Registration for the #THIA2023 conference is currently open. The event will be held at the Cooley Center in the Texas Medical Center.

The conference is on Sept. 15th.

Specialist Digital Health Workforce Census 2023

Are you part of the specialist digital health workforce? Are you responsible for health data, information, knowledge, or technology?

Be part of the census that captures the vital information about this workforce. This information is used by government, academia, peak bodies, and industry to identify workforce growth, emerging roles, and career pathways, forecast future workforce needs, and inform education and training needs.
