AMIA will host its Annual Symposium in New Orleans in mid-November. Several members of the McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics Community were recently recognized by AMIA and will be honored at the event.

They include the Chair in the Department of Health Data Science and Artificial Intelligence and Professor Xiaoqian Jiang, PhD, Associate Professor Kirk Roberts, PhD, and Adjunct Professor Stephen Wong, PhD. The Gaining Equity in Training for Public Health Informatics and Technology (GET PHIT) Consortium is led by McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics and UTHealth Houston School of Public Health, in partnership with HBCUs, HSIs, and other university partners, and state and local public health agencies across Texas. The program is focused on reducing the nation's health inequities by expanding the number of public health professionals from underrepresented groups trained in public health informatics and technology.

GET PHIT is now accepting applications for the Spring 2024 Paid Internship Program. Students with strong interest in public health informatics and technology are encouraged to apply. The GET PHIT internship is a 160-hour part-time paid internship relevant to public health informatics. Students will receive a stipend ranging from $2,440 - $3,000 based on education and skill. Practicum credit for the internship is also an option for eligible students.

• Professor James Langabeer, PhD, EdD, MBA, spoke to the Houston Chronicle about fentanyl prevention after he appeared as a guest speaker on a panel with U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas.
• Dr. Langabeer also talked to KENS-TV Channel 5 in San Antonio about the Heroes Helpline helping first responders cope with mental health issues.
• MoneyGeek featured Dr. Langabeer in a recent article in which he provided tips on finding the right health insurance.
• Associate Professor Luca Giancardo, PhD worked with several UTHealth Houston faculty members to publish research in JAMA Neurology. Their study was featured in several media outlets, including ScienceMag.
