BMI 6309 Implementation and Evaluation in Healthcare Quality and Safety

This course prepares students to move evidence-based quality and safety ideas from the drawing board to sustained, measurable impact in real healthcare settings. Using principles from improvement science, implementation science, human-centered design and evaluation, students learn tolaunch, test, monitor, and continuously improve sociotechnical interventions—including AI-enabled tools—while ensuring usability, safety, compliance, and stakeholder alignment. Weekly modules blend conceptual frameworks with hands-on practice; a semester-long project guides teams through chartering an improvement project.

Upon successful completion of the course, students will:

• Apply systems-thinking and quality improvement frameworks to analyze a complex healthcare problem and charter a formal improvement project.
• Design an evidence-based, sociotechnical intervention using core principles from improvement science and human-centered design.
• Evaluate an intervention’s effectiveness and safety by testing changes with PDSA cycles and analyzing data with statistical process control.
• Formulate a strategy for implementation and sustainability that incorporates change management principles and stakeholder communication.
• Communicate a project’s full lifecycle—from rationale and methodology to impact and lessons learned—through structured documentation and a professional presentation.
