The Data Science and Informatics Core for Cancer Research (DSICCR) at McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics (MSBMI), the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth), has a bioinformatics postdoc position available immediately.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful candidate is expected to receive postdoctoral training or work on projects in data science, AI, and informatics through research projects within DSICCR. The candidate will be involved in study design, data collection, analysis pipeline development, data analysis, results interpretation, and manuscript writing. There could also be opportunities to participate in grant proposal preparation and teaching/mentoring. The candidate's responsibilities include collaborative research with faculty at UTHealth and other Texas institutions. The successful candidate will receive training in a dynamic environment at MSBMI with very active research, education, and application of informatics to clinical practice. Furthermore, the candidate will receive training in AI research and using DSICCR's advanced computing infrastructure: a Hadoop cluster, a large memory server, several advanced Nvidia GPU servers, including the world's first Nvidia DGX H100 server, as well as an HPC cluster at the Texas Advanced Computing Center.
DSICCR has a cross-disciplinary team and a productive track record in data science, informatics, and artificial intelligence. Past postdocs have had success in publishing high impacct papers (Zhu and Zheng, JAMA, 320(11):1103-1104, 2018, PMID: 30326503; Yuan, et al., Nature Communications, 12, 2031, doi:10.1038/s41467-021-22200-5, 2021, PMID: 33795676) and are significant contributors of our winning teams in the national and international competitions (BioCreative and LitCoin NLP Challenge). UTHealth is in the world-renowned Texas Medical Center (TMC) in cosmopolitan Houston, Texas, the fourth largest city in the United States. SBMI currently offers PhD and Master's degrees; it also features certificate programs in biomedical and health informatics.
APPOINTMENTS/BENEFITS: This position is a full-time, 12-month appointment renewable yearly. We expect the postdoc training to last 2-3 years. H1-B sponsorship can be provided as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS: The individual should possess a Ph.D. in bioinformatics, biostatistics, or computational biology with a strong training and track record in biostatistics/statistics methodology development and application. A record of verifiable, published research in bioinformatics is required. Excellent teamwork, communication skills, and the ability to develop and maintain high-quality collaborations are required.
