What is Clinical Decision Support (CDS)?

Clinical decision support (CDS) delivers specific information to clinicians, staff, and others at appropriate times and formats in a manner designed to enhance health and health care. CDS includes a multitude of tools to enhance decision-making within the clinical workflow. These tools include automated alerts and reminders; guidelines; order sets; focused patient data reports and summaries; documentation templates; diagnostic support, and contextually relevant reference information, among other tools.

CDS has a number of important benefits, including:

  • Increased quality of care and enhanced health outcomes
  • Avoidance of errors and adverse events
  • Improved efficiency, cost-benefit, and provider and patient satisfaction
