Happy Holidays from SBMI
Happy holidays to everyone in the SBMI Community. We hope everyone enjoys a happy, safe, and healthy holiday season.
The university will be closed Dec. 24 and 25 and Jan. 1, 2021. SBMI will be open on Dec. 28 - 31 with limited hours and limited staff so please email [email protected] if you need any assistance during those days. Regular business hours will resume on Jan. 4, 2021.

Fall 2020 Poster Session Winner
SBMI hosted its first virtual poster session on Dec. 14 as over twenty student research posters were presented. We want to thank all the students for their hard work and flexibility in presenting posters virtually. We also want to thank the faculty judges for their valuable time and all other visitors who stopped by the rooms while students presented.
Please join us in congratulating the fall 2020 poster session winner – Yang Liu (PhD Student). His poster is titled “Current Studies about Atypical BRAF Mutations in Colorectal Cancer” and has won the Paul C. Boyle Award for Excellence in Research for this semester.
HIMSS Scholarship Opportunities
HIMSS Foundation awards annual scholarships to HIMSS student members who have achieved academic excellence and have the potential to be future leaders in the healthcare information and technology industry.
The application for 2021 is currently open and the deadline for all scholarships is Jan. 28, 2021. Please visit the HIMSS website to learn more about each opportunity.
SBMI Bragging Points
Members of the SBMI Community have recently achieved noteworthy accomplishments. We want to recognize and applaud their endeavors.
- Advancing States and its board of directors named Professor Lex Frieden, MA the 2020 Katie Beckett Award winner.
- Professor Cui Tao, PhD and Research Scientist Fang Li, PhD co-authored an article that was published in BMC Medical Informatics and Decision Making earlier this month.
- Alumnus and Assistant Professor Jingcheng Du, PhD co-authored an article that was recently published via the JAMA Network Open. Professor Cui Tao, PhD is listed as a co-author as well.

- Professor James Langabeer, PhD, MBA was recently interviewed by KHOU 11 News about the rising number of opioid overdoses during the pandemic.
