Members of the McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics Community have recently achieved noteworthy accomplishments. We want to recognize and applaud these individuals.
The Biomedical Informatics, Genomics and Translational Cancer Research Training Program (BIG-TCR) is hosting 11 undergraduate interns this summer. They began their program on June 5th with orientation. The interns will spend a total of 10 weeks at McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics doing research, learning about graduate school opportunities, and engaging in enriching activities, workshops, and seminars.
Professor Arif Harmanci, PhD recently earned a new National Human Genome Research Institute (NIH) grant worth over $2.2 million.
Additionally, Professor Xiaoqian Jiang, PhD earned a new $1.2 million National Cancer Institute (NIH) grant. Dr. Jiang and his colleague will focus on developing a secure analysis tool for cancer research.
Professor Dean Sittig, PhD was recently named one of HealthTech Magazine's "30 Healthcare IT Influencers Worth a Follow in 2023."
McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics at UTHealth Houston, along with the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UTSW), is pleased to announce the Annual Texas Health Informatics Alliance (THIA) Conference. The conference will be held in-person on the UTHealth Houston campus at the Cooley University Life Center on September 15, 2023.

On May 15 to 17, the Office of National Coordinator (ONC) performed a site visit for the Gaining Equity in Training for Public Health Informatics and Technology (GET PHIT) Program. The visit took place at the first GET PHIT summer bootcamp at Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) in Prairie View, TX. During the site visit, the ONC team learned about the great training opportunities the GET PHIT program is providing from the bootcamps to the internships at all eight of the consortium partner universities.
The ONC staff also observed the PVAMU GET PHIT Bootcamp where there were 32 students in attendance (23 PVAMU students, 8 UTRGV students, 1 UTHealth Houston SPH student).
