McWilliams Bragging Points

Members of the McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics Community have recently achieved noteworthy accomplishments. We want to recognize and applaud these individuals.

  • PhD Candidate Jeritt Thayer (pictured in the photo) successfully defended his dissertation earlier this month and will earn his degree in August.
  • In late May, faculty from McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics played a large role in two events focused on advancing AI skills for healthcare professionals. To learn more about those events, visit our news webpage.

  • Zaid Soomro, a MS student at McWilliams who works at University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, co-authored an article in CNS Oncology with several colleagues.
  • Assistant Professor Angela Ross, DNP is part of the HIMSS Nursing Innovation Advisory Group that recently published guidance on the "Five Rights of AI in Healthcare."
  • A newly published JAMIA article, co-authored by Professor Dean Sittig, PhD, is now available.
  • Professor James Langabeer, PhD and Associate Professor Tiffany Champagne-Langabeer, PhD have a new book that was published earlier this month. The book will be used as a textbook in healthcare management and strategy programs.
  • Associate Professors Ziqian Xie, PhD & Luca Giancardo, PhD and the Department of Bioinformatics and Systems Medicine Chair Degui Zhi, PhD collaborated with several other researchers to co-author a PLOS Genetics article that is available online.
  • Nearly two dozen researchers collaborated on a new JAMIA article titled “RefAI: a GPT-powered retrieval-augmented generative tool for biomedical literature recommendation and summarization.” Many authors are faculty, researchers, students and/or alumni from McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics.

Registration Exploration on July 23

In preparation for Fall 2024, the school will host Registration Exploration on Tuesday, July 23 from 4 to 5:30 PM (CDT) via Zoom. We encourage all students to attend and learn more about Fall 2024 courses, get information on degree requirements, and ask any questions they have while regular registration is still open.

Lucidchart is Now Available – Free to UTHealth Houston Community

We’re happy to announce that Lucidchart, the cloud-based application for creating flowcharts and visualizations, is now available to all UTHealth Houston faculty, staff, and students at no cost.

To access Lucidchart please visit: https://www.lucidchart.com/, click Log in at the top right, and click SSO button on the login page and follow prompts to enter your UTHealth Houston login credentials.

AMIA Student Volunteer Opportunity

AMIA is seeking student volunteers to participate in literature reviews and collaborate to synthesize findings from the last year of biomedical informatics research. Volunteers will work closely with AMIA working groups, recently published researchers, Dr. Jim Cimino, and other passionate students.

Time Commitment:

  • July 10th - August 10th: Initial literature reviews (not more than 2-3 hours/week).
  • August 15th - September 15th: Intensive reviewing period (not more than 6 hours/week).
  • September 20th - October 15th: Review synthesis and presentation preparation (not more than 2-3 hours/week).

Application Criteria:

  • Current high school, undergraduate, masters, PhD student, postdoc, fellow, or trainee in biomedical and health informatics or a related field.
  • Interest in scientific writing and review in biomedical and health informatics.
  • Availability to work on the project from July 10, 2024 to October 15, 2024.

We encourage all interested McWilliams students to submit an application by the July 15th deadline.

Updated Travel Request Form for Faculty

The McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics Travel Request Form has been moved to QuestionPro. We want to remind all faculty members to submit the form well in-advance of any work-related trips or travel.
