McWilliams Bragging Points

Members of the McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics Community have recently achieved noteworthy accomplishments. We want to recognize and applaud these individuals.

  • Professor Lex Frieden, MA was recently named one of the Robert M. Ball Award for Outstanding Achievements in Social Insurance winners for 2026. Each year this award is given to leaders whose work reflects Ball's enduring commitment to protecting and strengthening social insurance for future generations.
Apollo McOwiti dissertation defense presentation
  • PhD Candidate Apollo McOwiti successfully defended his dissertation on Monday, June 15 and will earn his degree in August.
  • DHI Alumna Nikki Blaze, '24 was named to Becker's Health IT's 170 women in health IT to know in 2026 list earlier this month. Click here to view the entire list.
  • Congratulations to Office of Academic Affairs Staff members Travis Crook, Jasmine Payton, and Keisha Smoke. They played a pivotal role in the success of the TxGAP 2026 GEM Conference that took place in San Antonio earlier this month. TxGAP is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting graduate enrollment professionals across Texas. The trio served on the conference committee and spent months helping to plan the event. Jasmine also served as a conference co-chair and a session presenter. Travis was honored with the TxGAP 2026 Committee Member of the Year Award for his service on the conference committee.
Summer 2026 Withdrawal Deadline – June 26

We want to remind all McWilliams Students that the last day to drop summer 2026 courses with a withdrawal grade of "W" is 5 pm CDT on Friday, June 26. As always, the Withdrawal Form must be submitted to process the request.

Should you have questions about withdrawing from a course, please contact the Office of Academic Affairs at [email protected].

Fall 2026 Scholarship Application is Open

McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics has a new application process that current students must use to apply for scholarships. On Monday, June 22, all current McWilliams students were notified via email that the new system, Scholarship Manager, is now open as we accept fall 2026 scholarship applications. Note that only current MSBMI students should apply. To be classified as current, you must be an active student for fall that has completed at least one course in your current academic program.

The fall 2026 application will close at 11:59 PM CDT on July 31. No late applications will be accepted, and students must apply via Scholarship Manager to be considered. If students have any questions about the new portal, they can email [email protected].

Registration Exploration on July 21

Registration for fall 2026 opens on July 8. In preparation for the beginning of a new semester, the school will host Registration Exploration on Tuesday, July 21 from 4:00 - 5:30 PM (CDT) via Zoom.

We encourage all students to attend and learn more about Fall 2026 courses, get information on degree requirements, and ask any questions they have while regular registration is still open.

HIMSS27 Proposals Due by June 30

The HIMSS Global Health Conference & Exhibition will take place April 5-8, 2027, in Chicago, Illinois. HIMSS is currently accepting proposals for the global conference. Wellness Week: July 6–10

The UTHealth Houston Office of Faculty Affairs and Development Wellness Committee, in collaboration with the Employee Wellness Programs, invites all employees to join Wellness Week from July 6 - 10.

From therapy animals and resilience training to AI-powered productivity tips and reflective writing, this weeklong series offers both virtual and in-person opportunities for faculty, staff, residents, and fellows to pause, recharge and reconnect. Sessions will focus on practical ways to reduce stress, prevent burnout, and build sustainable, healthy habits at work and beyond.
