Members of the McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics Community have recently achieved noteworthy accomplishments. We want to recognize and applaud these individuals.

  • D. Bradley McWilliams Chair and Professor Hongfang Liu, PhD has recently been awarded numerous grants. Please help us as we congratulate her on these awards.
    • GQ Zhang, PhD and Licong Cui, PhD, also faculty members at McWilliams, are also principal investigators of the grant worth over $27.2 million. This grant will allow the researchers to lead a national initiative using real-world data to unlock discoveries about Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

    • Food and Drug Administration (FDA) grant worth $1.5 million with a UTHealth Houston budget of $674,776. Associate Professor Liwei Wang, PhD is also participating in this study.
    • A over grant worth over $2 million from the National Institute of Health (NIH) to develop a web-based knowledgebase that integrates perioperative organ injury (POI) data. McWilliams faculty members Licong Cui, PhD, Jinlian Wang, PhD, and W. Jim Zheng, PhD all serve as co-investigators for this project.
    • NIH grant titled EMED: An Ethical Mixture-of-Experts Digital Twin Framework for Medical Device Surveillance. McWilliams faculty members Liwei Wang, PhD and Assaf Gottlieb, PhD are co-investigators for this project.
  • Assistant Professor Sunyang Fu, PhD was recently awarded a $556,875 grant from the National Institute on Aging to explore enhancing detection and prevention of Cancer-related cognitive impairment.

We invite the entire McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics Community to attend the 8th Annual Glaser Society Proceedings on Friday, November 7. The 2025 Glaser Award Recipient is Patricia Flatley Brennan, RN, PhD, former director of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

GET PHIT Internship Opportunity

The Gaining Equity in Training for Public Health Informatics and Technology (GET PHIT) program is accepting applications for Spring 2026 Internships.

Get PHIT

GET PHIT is now accepting applications for the Spring 2026 Paid Internship Program. Students with strong interest in public health informatics and technology are encouraged to apply. The GET PHIT internship is a 160-hour part-time paid internship relevant to public health informatics. Students will receive a stipend based on education and skill. Practicum credit for the internship is also an option for eligible students.

Emerging Healthcare Leaders Poster Proposals for HIMSS26

Calling all current students and recent graduates! If you have researched innovative ideas or pioneering technologies to advance health information and technology, we invite you to submit a proposal and present a poster at HIMSS26.

Applicants must be HIMSS members in good standing. Each proposed poster session topic must be aligned with a HIMSS Global Health Conference education topic. Should your proposal be selected, you will receive one (1) complimentary registration to the HIMSS Global Health Conference to present your poster in Las Vegas on March 9-16, 2026.

We encourage students or recent alumni to apply and take part in this exciting opportunity! Tuesday, October 14 is the application deadline. For more information or for questions, contact [email protected].
