In memoriam: Robert “Bob” Vogler, DSN
Robert “Bob” Vogler, DSN, family nurse practitioner and former faculty member at Cizik School of Nursing at UTHealth Houston and McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics at UTHealth Houston, died Feb. 12. Over his 28 years at the university, Vogler became a beloved member of the community, touching the lives of countless students and colleagues through his dedication to teaching, mentorship, and service.
He joined the School of Nursing in 1985 and served as an associate professor and associate dean of clinical affairs and community service before transitioning to McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics in 2006. During his time at McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics, Vogler served as both an associate professor and associate dean for Academic Affairs. Even after his retirement in 2012, he remained at the school, continuing to teach students while providing the Office of Academic Affairs staff with administrative support until 2015.
“Bob Vogler is remembered for a life devoted to learning, care, and service to others,” said Jiajie Zhang, PhD, dean at McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics. “He brought together the compassion of nursing, the curiosity of a scholar, and the vision of an informatics pioneer. His quiet presence strengthened our community, and his legacy will endure in the generations of students and colleagues he inspired.”
Vogler earned his associate’s degree from Columbia Basin College in Pasco, Washington, in 1964, his bachelor’s degree in nursing from Seattle University in 1966, his master’s degree in education from North Texas State University in 1972, his master’s degree in adult nursing from the Medical College of Georgia School of Nursing in 1976, and his doctorate in nursing from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing in 1984.
His celebration of life is scheduled for April 18 in Bellaire, Texas. His former students and colleagues are welcome to attend to honor his memory. More information can be found on his tribute webpage.
