Health Informatics is one of the core contributing sciences of today's healthcare practice. The role of informatics in general and clinical decision support in particular, in improving the quality of care while reducing the cost of care and medical errors is well recognized. Arden Syntax for Medical Logic Modules (Arden Syntax) is an International Standards Organization (ISO) and American National Standards Institute (ANSI) recognized healthcare standard and is widely accepted as a pioneering standardization effort towards sharing healthcare decision-making knowledge bases for electronic information systems. Arden Syntax is maintained and further developed by the Arden Syntax Special Interest Group, sponsored by the Clinical Decision Support Technical Committee at Health Level 7 Inc (HL7). There is increasing use and acceptance of Electronic Health Records (EHR) in healthcare. Further research and development in the area of clinical decision support (CDS) should help raise Arden Syntax use thus achieving its potential to allow sharing of knowledge bases and decision support capabilities. This review paper examines the current state of the Arden Syntax standard and discusses why healthcare organizations should be proactive in seeking Arden Syntax compliant clinical information systems in the near future.
