A Dean’s Excellence Fund was established to provide the dean of the School of Biomedical Informatics a critical operational advantage. No other funding—be it philanthropic or grant-related—offers the school’s chief administrator discretionary monies that can be used to support the school's highest priorities. These unrestricted, current-use funds are essential to the success of diverse initiatives that range from faculty recruitment and retention, student scholarships and infrastructure development to seed and bridge funding for research and unfunded capital equipment purchases. A critical measure of an academic institution’s competitive edge is its capacity to provide financial assistance to its students. At UTHealth School of Biomedical Informatics, the ability to offer financial resources allows SBMI to recruit the best and brightest graduate students to its programs—individuals who will assume leadership roles in clinical practice, academia, health IT, public health, health service delivery, technology development and related start-up companies.
The SBMI Scholarship Fund has been created to provide the dean and faculty opportunities to offer tuition assistance to deserving graduate students. These current-use funds are essential to the success of the school and its most invaluable resource. Independent of making a contribution in any amount to the SBMI Scholarship Fund, a donor can establish a named scholarship endowment with a minimum gift of $50,000, thereby ensuring SBMI graduate student support in perpetuity.
The SBMI Fellowship Fund provides current-use support to outstanding doctoral students who work with SBMI faculty on seminal biomedical informatics research projects. Here again, a named fellowship endowment fund can be established with a minimum gift of $50,000 thus facilitating the training and development of talented young biomedical informatics academicians and researchers at SBMI for generations to come.

On Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014, SBMI associate professor Noriaki "Nori" Aoki, MD, PhD, passed away at the age of 47. UTHealth School of Biomedical Informatics, led by Dean Jiajie Zhang, established this fund to commemorate his life and myriad accomplishments. This resource will benefit outstanding graduate students across a broad spectrum of needs, including scholarships, travel costs associated with conferences, practica in the U.S. and abroad, and national and international research projects—as well as other costs associated with a student’s comprehensive educational experience.
