McWilliams Bragging Points

Members of our McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics Community have recently achieved noteworthy accomplishments. We want to recognize and applaud their endeavors.

  • Professor Xiaobo Zhou, PhD earned a Cancer Prevention & Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) grant this month. The project goal is to establish an artificial intelligence liver cancer screening platform (AILC), an artificial intelligence imaging system for liver cancer screening, and early detection in liver cirrhosis patients.
  • Two McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics students recently defended their doctoral work this month.
  • Sheena Rogers defended her Translational Project on February 14 and will earn her Doctorate in Health Informatics (DHI).

  • Yaobin Ling will earn his PhD in May after successfully passing his dissertation defense on February 24.

Etiquette Dinner 2025 – Registration is Open

Students are invited to register for the 2025 Etiquette Dinner to explore business dining etiquette. Enjoy a free meal while you learn more about multi-course dining concepts, utensil usage, ordering from various menus, ordering wine and host responsibilities.

Mastering Business Etiquette: Key to Professional Success

Note that this is a school sponsored event and attendance is limited to McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics students, only. Registration is first come, first served and when the capacity is reached, registration will close.

Commencement Ceremony – Save the Date

We invite the entire McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics community to attend our annual Commencement Ceremony on Wednesday, May 14. This is not a joint ceremony with other UTHealth Houston schools — only graduates from McWilliams will be honored during this event.

The ceremony will be held at NRG Arena at 2:00 PM and a live stream option will be offered for those unable to attend in-person. Our Commencement Speaker will be Peter Embí, MD, MS. Dr. Embí is a professor and chair of the Department of Biomedical Informatics, Professor of Medicine, and senior vice president for Research and Innovation at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

GET PHIT Internship Application for Summer 2025

We encourage all McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics students to apply for a Summer 2025 GET PHIT Internship. These paid internships not only meet the school’s practicum requirement (if you are eligible a practicum) but they are a great way to get public health informatics career experience.

The AMIA 2025 Annual Symposium will take place in Atlanta, GA on November 15-19. You are invited to contribute your best work for presentation at the Annual Symposium.

Mar. 28 Last day to drop with a withdrawal grade of “W” with the appropriate form (pdf) (Docusign)
Mar. 26 DHI/PhD - Last day to defend translational project/dissertation. Drafts must be sent to the Advising Committee for review 10 business days before the defense date.
