McWilliams Bragging Points

Members of our McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics Community have recently achieved noteworthy accomplishments. We want to recognize and applaud their endeavors..

  • Dean Jiajie Zhang, PhD and six other McWilliams faculty members facilitated a virtual workshop to discuss “Artificial Intelligence in Biomedicine and Healthcare” earlier this month. Learn more about the workshop on our website.
  • Several members of our McWilliams Community have articles in the latest JAMIA issue. Alumnae Surabhi Datta, PhD '22, MS '18 and Yanfei Wang, PhD '23 co-authored both of their articles with faculty members and/or fellow alumni from our school.
  • Adjunct Faculty Member Jorge Ferrer, MD, MBA, FAMIA, FHIMMS recently earned a FORUM IT100 award. Ferrer works in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in the Clinical Informatics & Data Management Office (CIDMO).
  • Associate Professor Luca Giancardo, PhD co-authored a new article published on iScience; a new open access journal from Cell Press. Their research highlights strategies to improve Large Vessel Occlusion detection.


Save the Date for Commencement in May 2024

McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics will host its annual Commencement Ceremony on Tuesday, May 7 this year. We invite the entire school community to attend.

MS, PhD, and DHI graduates from Summer 2023, Fall 2023, and Spring 2024 are eligible to walk in the ceremony. In the coming weeks, our Office of Academic Affairs team will contact eligible participants directly with additional information regarding the ceremony.

  • Shoutout HTX published a profile on Dean Jiajie Zhang, PhD in late December. It even includes some of his go-to spots here in Houston.
  • Associate Dean for Applied Informatics Robert Murphy, MD, was recently mentioned in a Becker’s Clinical Leadership article highlighting research he co-authored, which revealed that the cost of treating patients with COVID-19 has risen 26% in two years.
