D. Bradley “Brad” McWilliams wrote his name into the UTHealth Houston story forever in 2023 with a transformational commitment to the School of Biomedical Informatics. His generosity created endowed research funds, academic positions, and scholarships, which will significantly enhance the school’s ability to leverage health data science to save and improve lives. In honor of his extraordinary gift, the school is now named D. Bradley McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics at UTHealth Houston.

McWilliams’ commitment to biomedical informatics reiterates his legacy as a champion of health care innovation to enhance community well-being.

He has served on the UTHealth Houston Development Board since 2009 and on several of the university’s committees and advisory councils. His generosity to the university has supported priorities including nursing, child development, molecular medicine, public health, and biomedical informatics—a testament to his long-standing devotion to Houston and the people who live here.

After three decades with Cooper Industries as an attorney, CPA, and CFO, McWilliams applied his financial expertise to advancing medical technology through private equity investing. McWilliams has consistently devoted his time and resources to improve the community, supporting the YMCA of Greater Houston, Hermann Park Conservancy, American Red Cross, Houston SPCA, Alley Theatre, Houston Symphony, and Houston Grand Opera.

  • Why did we change the name of the school?

    In recognition of a visionary investment by D. Bradley “Brad” McWilliams, a long-time supporter of UTHealth Houston, the school has been renamed D. Bradley McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics at UTHealth Houston. The gift establishes innovative research funding, and will support scholarships and faculty appointments, empowering the school to grow as a leader in biomedical informatics.

  • When did the name change go into effect?

    The name change went into effect the day the gift was announced: April 20, 2023.

  • How should I refer to the school name in written or spoken references?

    Guidelines in the proper use of McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics in print, narrative, and conversation may be found in the editorial standards page in the UTHealth Houston brand standards website.

Campus and Employee Information

  • How will this impact students?

    Student support includes doctoral scholarships in the first year of study, and a D. Bradley McWilliams Scholars program will provide much-needed philanthropic student scholarship support. Additionally, a portion of the gift will support endowed faculty appointments, to recruit and retain exceptional faculty in education and research.

  • Will new programs be a part of the change?

    The gift establishes innovation funds and research funds to jumpstart promising research, and to support ongoing work in data science, artificial intelligence, and machine learning.

  • Will the campus email or websites change?

    The website address and email addresses will not change.

    The website will be updated throughout with McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics in written copy and with logo updates. We encourage everyone at the school to update their email signatures. Files are available from the toolbox page of the UTHealth Houston brand standards website, under Additional Resources.

  • Will campus signage change?

    Signage will be phased in over the next year to reflect the new name.

  • Will I get new business cards?

    UTHealth Houston stationery, which includes letterhead, No. 10 business envelopes, business cards, executive pocket cards, and A6 note cards with matching envelopes, will be available to order through the UTHealth Houston Coupa portal in the Absolute Color store. If you do not have access to the Coupa portal, please contact your manager or department administrator. Stationery files are now available to download and send to a university-approved printer.

    Updated files with the name and logo for McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics in the Coupa portal should be available by June 1, 2023.

  • What name will be on diplomas?

    Beginning in May 2024, McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics and the seal of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.

  • How do I refer to the school on my CV?

    Acceptable ways to describe the name change on transcripts or alumni documentation:
