Seeking Innovative Solutions to Emergency and Public Health Challenges

ACE Lab is a multidisciplinary team of scientists and clinicians that seeks to improve policy and practice around substance use, cardiovascular disease, and public health emergencies. We work at the intersection of emergency care and public health, and are primarily focused on prevention, policy, and treatment programs targeting vulnerable populations and especially those that engage with hospital emergency departments and first responders.

Seeking Innovative Solutions to Emergency and Public Health Challenges.

We have three core missions: Research, Training, and Clinical Programs.

Training Programs

We provide training around our research lines focused on a number of areas. Currently we are offering:

  • HeroesFR: This training is oriented for our nation’s first responders (fire, police, and EMS) around substance use and mental health.

  • Opioid Reversal: WE provide custom in-house and online electronic training on overdose reversals using Naloxone.

Clinical Programs

We help provide research-supported treatment programs. Our top programs include:

  • Houston ER Opioid System: We provide outreach to individuals who have previously overdosed or are considered high-risk, and provide a comprehensive recovery-oriented system of care including medications, behavioral interventions, and peer support.

  • HEROES Helpline: This is a toll-free helpline for any Texas first responders, whether police, fire, or emergency medical services—to call and receive information about treatment options in their area. 833-EMS-INTX

The ACE Lab is led by Dr. James Langabeer, a cognitive scientist and health services researcher that focuses on improving health outcomes, and Dr. Tiffany Champagne-Langabeer, a public health informaticist and outcomes researcher. Our research team is comprised of scientists and practitioners in social work, criminal justice, emergency medicine, behavioral science, and data science.
