EHR Usability Symposium

Follow this link to the 2012 SHARPC EHR Usability Symposium Agenda: Usability & ONC’s 2014 Certification Criteria held on Sunday, November 4, 2012.

Overview:

Improved usability will accelerate the adoption and meaningful use of EHRs. The Safety Enhanced Design criterion of the 2014 Standards and Certification Criteria for certified EHR technology includes the need to demonstrate a user-centered design process for 8 Meaningful Use objectives[1]. This workshop, developed especially for EHR developers and implementers, will 1) review the requirements of the new rule, 2) present approaches to facilitate user-centered design (UCD) and usability assessments, and provide interactive feedback regarding how developers and implementers can creatively meet the objectives of 2014 certification criteria while making sure that they are not constrained by concrete interpretations of Federal regulations that were meant to allow for and even encourage “out of the box” user-centered design ideas.

EHR Usability Symposium Objectives:

  • Understand the 2014 EHR certification criteria related to safety enhanced design
  • Describe approaches that can be used to meet the safety enhanced design requirements
  • Identify and share strategies to help the adoption of user-centered design strategies already underway by representatives in industry
  • Understand how to interpret EHR certification criteria and how they can be applied to innovative user centered design ideas.
