The UTHealth School of Biomedical Informatics is helping to improve health care and biomedical research by developing, refining and advancing the field of biomedical informatics through research, service and by training professionals in all areas of the discipline, including cognitive informatics, clinical informatics and public health informatics.
The Center for Computational Biomedicine (CCB) at School of Biomedical Informatics aims to support biomedical discovery by developing, evaluating, and applying novel informatics methods and software to extract and analyze heterogeneous biomedical data. Led by Hua Xu, PhD, the CCB consists of faculty, staff, and students at SBMI. It is a unique research platform that fills in gaps between bioinformatics and clinical informatics research.
The Center for Health Security and Phenotyping (CHSP) at School of Biomedical Informatics focuses on using advanced computer science and applied mathematics methodology to facilitate and speedup biomedical data analysis. Led by Xiaoqian Jiang, PhD, the CHSP consists of faculties, staff, programmers, students at SBMI. The strength of combining secure and privacy-preserving solutions with advanced machine learning models make CHSP unique in exploring massive and sensitive healthcare data across different modality and sources.
The mission of the Center for Precision Health is to develop, implement and evaluate novel informatics and analytic approaches to advancing precision health, including basic, translational and population research aiming to promote prevention, improve treatment efficacy, and ensure patient safety.
The Data Science and Informatics Core for Cancer Research (DSICCR) at UTHealth is funded by the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT RP170668) to translate the cutting-edge data science and informatics research to easily accessible, high-quality, and user-friendly software and services to advance cancer research.
The UTHealth School of Biomedical Informatics (SBMI) formed a health data service in response to the growing number of health datasets available at the school and the increased need to utilize those datasets for research and education purposes. Working with the newly established Data Science and Informatics Core for Cancer Research (DSICCR), the SBMI Data Service provides technical assistance and consulting services to qualified clients.
The Center's priority is helping providers fully understand and take advantage of the full benefits of electronic health records. The Center enables providers to achieve meaningful use objectives, minimize financial and administrative burdens, reduce costs associated with medical errors, improve patient safety and quality of care and prepare and position providers for future pay for performance.
The HEROES program is a national clinical trial to develop a coordinated, comprehensive system of care for managing opioid use disorder. The goal is to improve the evidence around opioid use nationally and locally, and specifically to provide patient navigation to appropriate interventions for patients impacted by this disease. Program outcomes include reduce opioid overdoses and longer retention in treatment for patients. It works by identifying patients during the emergency phase (either those that call EMS for help, or arrive at a hospital emergency department). The study is being conducted in conjunction with the Houston Fire Department, Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center and the Houston Recovery Center.
National Center for Cognitive Informatics and Decision Making in Healthcare (NCCD) is funded by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT under the Strategic Health IT Advanced Research Projects (SHARP) Program, which seeks to support improvements in the quality, safety and efficiency of health care through advanced information technology.
The Vision of the Biomedical Informatics Group (BIG), a component of the Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences (CCTS), is to transform clinical and translational research by improving communication and integrating disparate data sources, including clinical, laboratory, and administrative data. We offer services to researchers, including access to clinical data and enhanced subject recruiting, and are involved in multiple local and national collaborations with other groups.
